What is Myofascial Trigger Point Therapy?

  • Myo- is Greek for of muscle; relating to muscle.
  • Fascia- a matrix of fibrous connective tissue occurring in sheets beneath the surface of the skin and between muscles and groups of muscles
  • A Trigger Point is a focus of hyperirritable point in the tissue that is locally tender and hypersensitive. Trigger points can be found in skin, fascia, ligaments and periosteal (bone).
  • Goal: Resolve Myofascial and Trigger Point Pain!

The Longer Pain is Present

  • The more your body begins to see it as normal as it continues to adapt to musculoskeletal pain
  • Your body recruits other muscles to into the pain pattern
  • Myofascial and Trigger Point Activation continues resulting in more dysfunction.
  • Myofascial and Trigger Point activation negatively impact the quality of life on all levels

What Will I Experience?

Your experience will include being worked with on a pain scale of 1-10, never going higher than 5/10. Too much pressure and the body will do what is normal, it will resist while protecting surrounding tissue. Your feedback is very important and valued. The correct amount of pressure allows the trigger point and fascia to relax, allowing the pressure to be modulated until the fascia releases and the trigger point is resolved. Next, patiently wait for the tissue to invite more pressure to be applied until the fascia and trigger points are resolved. The session will conclude with a heat pack and stretches.

Trigger Points and Referred Pain

A trigger point is an area of the body, hypersensitive to touch, that can cause pain elsewhere in the body and restricting range of motion prohibiting normal function. This is known as “referred pain”. A qualified Trigger Point Therapist is well-trained to understand how pain refers from one area to another. This training is unique to Trigger Point Therapy. Decades of scientific research has determined where specific trigger points refer pain. Combining this knowledge with a physical exam allows a Trigger Point Therapist to confirm the referral pattern.

How It Works

Through skillful palpation, the direction and quality of specific muscle fibers of a trigger point can be located. Once located, the trigger point can be released precisely applying hands-on techniques. A single treatment can often bring significant relief, however, the longer the specific type of pain has been present, the longer it will take to resolve it, up to an average of five treatments. Documenting your history, occupation, diet, sleep patterns, fitness activities, prior treatments and your current goals will help me understand you as a whole person. This knowledge allows for the design of a comprehensive treatment plan that ends by empowering you to maintain or eliminate your pain.
